I started Good Crew Media because I kept hearing the same thing from every business owner I worked with.

"We can't find staff."

It didn't matter what industry. Mechanics. Plumbers. Cleaners. Hospitality operators. Trades. Healthcare. The story was always the same. They were paying SEEK, boosting Facebook posts, calling recruiters, and still ending up short-handed.

This is the story of how a video production business pivoted to fix that.

The conversation that kept happening

I'd been making video professionally for years before Good Crew. Automotive shoots. Aerospace projects. Brand films. Plenty of work, plenty of clients, no shortage of cool stuff to film.

And in almost every conversation with the business owner before, during, or after a shoot, the same line would come up.

"Mate, the work's fine. It's the team that's killing me. We can't find anyone good."

The first few times I heard it, I thought it was a one-off. Then it became background noise. Then it became the dominant complaint of every successful business I worked with.

A plumber on the Coast told me she'd been trying to hire for five years. Five years of SEEK ads. Five years of boosting Facebook posts. Five years of barely getting any applications, and almost none worth interviewing. She had one team member who, in her words, was "just a number." Not the right fit. Not someone she would have chosen. But she needed a body in the van.

That moment stuck with me. Five years of pouring money into hiring channels that weren't working, and ending up with a hire she didn't even want.

The realisation

I'd just spent years getting really good at making businesses look great on camera. Showing the team. The work. The standards. The personality. The kind of content that makes customers trust you and feel like they know you before they've even called.

And it hit me. That's exactly what hiring needed.

Every owner I was working with had the same problem. Their workplace was actually a good place to work. Their teams were tight. Their standards were high. The people who already worked there genuinely liked it. But none of that was getting communicated to potential candidates.

The gap wasn't quality. It was visibility.

If we aimed the same content thinking at hiring, we could solve the problem most owners were burning years and thousands of dollars trying to solve.

The mechanics of what changed

The technical insight is simple. SEEK and Indeed are catchments for active job seekers, the people who are right now scrolling job boards looking for work. With unemployment around 4.1% nationally and 3.2% on the Sunshine Coast, that pool is small and mostly low-quality.

The people you actually want are passive candidates. They've got jobs. They're employed somewhere else. They're not browsing SEEK. They're scrolling Facebook and Instagram during lunch breaks, after shifts, on the couch in the evening.

If you want to reach them, you've got to go where they already are. With content that interrupts the scroll. That makes them stop and think "that looks better than where I work."

Video does that better than anything else.

What Good Crew actually does

Good Crew Media builds recruitment campaigns that combine three things.

Real workplace video. Short, honest content that shows the workplace, the team, and the role. Not glossy corporate stuff. Real people, real days. The kind of content that lets a passive candidate get a genuine feel for the place in 30 to 60 seconds.

Targeted social ads. Putting that content in front of qualified locals through Facebook and Instagram. Same audience that businesses use for customer marketing, just aimed at hiring instead.

Dedicated landing pages with smart screening. Not one-click application forms that any spammer can bash through. Pages built to convert serious candidates and filter out the rest.

The goal is to take hiring from "posting and praying" to running an actual system. One that brings in qualified, locally based, already-employed people who'd move for the right opportunity.

The early results

The first proof was a local mechanics workshop. The owner had been trying to hire a transmission specialist for months. SEEK wasn't delivering. He was about to call a recruiter and pay $15,000 for the privilege.

We ran a single-day shoot. Filmed the workshop, the team, the work. Cut it into a few ad-ready clips. Set up a dedicated careers page and a paid social campaign targeting mechanics within 25 kilometres.

Three weeks later, he'd made three hires. Not one. Three. Total ad spend was $1,171, which works out to about $390 per hire. Compared to $13,500 to $20,000 for one recruiter placement, that's a different game entirely.

More importantly, every applicant was qualified. The kind of people he'd been searching for via SEEK and not finding. They were already employed at other shops, slightly fed up, and ready to move for the right place.

That campaign told me this was real. It wasn't a fluke. The model worked.

Why this matters for Coast businesses

The Sunshine Coast has about 39,000 local businesses competing for the same skilled people. Employment growth here is outpacing the state average. The labour force is tight and getting tighter.

If you keep hiring the way most businesses still hire, you're going to keep losing. Not because you're a bad business. Because you're fishing in a shrinking pond while your competitors are quietly figuring out the bigger one.

The businesses on the Coast that get this right over the next few years are going to dominate. The ones who don't will keep wondering where everyone went.

What I want for Coast businesses

The end goal isn't to sell more campaigns. It's to fix a problem that's been quietly killing growth for years.

Good businesses, run by good owners, with good teams and good standards, shouldn't be losing five years to bad hiring channels. They shouldn't be settling for staff they don't want. They shouldn't be paying recruiters $15,000 a hire to find people they could have reached themselves.

If I can help even a handful of local businesses build the kind of hiring system that pulls passive talent in instead of begging active job seekers to apply, that's worth doing.

The takeaway

Good Crew Media exists because the same hiring conversation kept happening in every shoot I did. Hardworking owners stuck with hiring channels that stopped working years ago.

We make video and run campaigns that put your workplace in front of the people who'd genuinely move for it. The same way the best marketing puts your business in front of the customers who'd genuinely buy from it.
