Before a good candidate applies for your role, they check three things. Most business owners don't realise this is happening, which is why they keep wondering where all the qualified applicants went.
If you can pass these three checks, you become a serious option. If you fail any one of them, you don't even get considered. The candidate scrolls on. You never know they were looking.
Let me walk you through exactly what they do.
Check 1: They Google you
The moment a candidate sees your job ad and feels even a flicker of interest, they Google your business. Not after they apply. Not after they read the listing. Right then. Often before they finish reading the ad.
What do they find?
If your website was built three years ago and looks like it, that's a problem. If the most recent news article about you is from 2021, that's a problem. If your Google reviews are mediocre or there are only a handful, that's a problem. If you don't show up at all, that's the biggest problem of them all.
Good candidates are picky. They have options. They use that first Google search to filter out anyone who doesn't look serious. A bad first impression online ends the conversation before it starts.
And here's the thing. They're not looking for perfection. They're looking for evidence that this is a real, active, well-run business. A recent post. A current website. Some signs of life.
Check 2: They check your socials
Google was the gut check. Socials are the vibe check.
They go straight to Facebook. Then Instagram. Maybe LinkedIn if they're feeling fancy. They're not looking at follower counts. They're looking at whether you actually exist as a workplace.
Does the page look active? Is there content from the last few months? Or is it a graveyard with the last post from someone's farewell in 2023?
Is there evidence of real humans? Team photos. Behind the scenes. Day in the life stuff. Or is it all stock images and price promotions?
Do the people in the photos look like they're enjoying their work? Or is it a forced, awkward team shot at the Christmas party?
This is the bit most businesses don't realise is happening. Your social media is your hiring brochure whether you intended it to be or not. The best candidates are reading it before they click apply.
If your socials look like nobody works there, you become a business that nobody wants to work at. It's that simple.
Check 3: They look for proof
This is the big one. The deal-breaker.
Every job ad in Australia says "great culture" and "supportive team." Every ad says "opportunities to grow." None of those phrases mean anything anymore because every employer has used them.
So the good candidates have stopped believing words. They're looking for proof.
Proof is photos of the actual team. Proof is video showing the actual workplace. Proof is testimonials from real employees, with real faces, talking about specific things they like. Proof is content that couldn't have been faked or copy-pasted from a template.
When they find proof, they relax. They start thinking about whether they'd fit in. They start picturing themselves there. They start writing the application in their head before they even open the form.
When they don't find proof, they assume the worst. Because they've been burned before. They've taken jobs at businesses that talked a big game and turned out to be nothing like the ad. They've learned not to trust unsupported claims.
No proof means no applicants. Or worse, only the desperate ones who'll take anything.
Why this hits Sunshine Coast businesses hardest
Most Coast businesses are quietly invisible online. They have a basic website, no social activity, no team content, no video. They get away with it for customers because most of their work comes from referrals or local trust.
But for hiring, invisibility is a death sentence.
When a candidate Googles your competitor and finds an active, alive-feeling business, then Googles you and finds a tumbleweed, you lose. The competitor doesn't even know they're winning. They're just doing the thing you're not.
With unemployment at 3.2% locally, you don't get the luxury of being invisible. You're competing for a shrinking pool of skilled people, and your online presence is the first filter they apply.
What "pass the vibe check" looks like
You don't need to be a content machine. You just need to look alive. Here's the minimum baseline.
A website with a recent project, a recent team photo, or a recent blog post. Something showing the business is current.
A Facebook page with posts from the last six months. Not daily content. Just signs of life. A photo of a finished job. A team shoutout. A behind-the-scenes shot. Anything.
An Instagram with workplace photos. Even ten or twelve posts can be enough if they show real humans doing real work. Most candidates aren't expecting an influencer feed. They just want to see the place.
Google reviews with at least 20 reviews and a 4-star-plus average. If you've been in business more than a few years and have fewer than 20 reviews, that's a credibility gap worth closing.
If you tick those four boxes, you've passed the vibe check.
The bigger win
Here's the thing most owners don't realise. The same content that helps you hire also helps you sell.
A video of your workplace builds trust with potential candidates AND potential customers. Photos of your team make new clients feel comfortable hiring you. Active social media makes your business look established and reliable.
You're not creating hiring content. You're creating business content that does double duty. That's why this stops feeling like extra work and starts feeling like the actual marketing you should have been doing anyway.
The takeaway
Before a good candidate applies, they're running three checks. Google, socials, proof. Most Sunshine Coast businesses fail all three without knowing.
The fix isn't expensive. It's not even hard. It's just deliberate. Some recent content. Some workplace video. Some real human evidence that this is a place worth working.
Do it, and you stop being invisible. Stop being invisible, and the good candidates start finding you.
