Everyone asks what a recruitment video shoot day actually looks like. Here's the honest answer.

It's not the production set most owners imagine. There's no green screen. There's no scripted dialogue. There's no army of crew. It's just a quiet day at your workplace with one or two of us filming what's already there.

Let me walk you through what happens, what we capture, and how one day turns into three months of usable content.

Morning: setup and the first 30 minutes

We rock up in the morning, usually around 8am or 9am depending on what your workplace looks like. The first 30 minutes is setup and saying hello.

The equipment isn't intimidating. A camera or two, a couple of microphones, sometimes a small light if your space is dim. That's it. We're not setting up a movie set. We're getting prepared to capture what's already happening.

This is also when we meet your team. We chat about who's on shift, what's happening that day, and what bits of work we want to capture. Most importantly, we make sure everyone knows the day is going to feel normal. We're not asking anyone to perform. We're not making them say things. We're just there to record the real version of the place.

The actual filming: real work, real people

This is the part most owners are surprised by. We don't direct your team. We don't ask them to redo things. We just film what's actually happening.

A tech is doing a brake job. We film it. A team member is on the phone with a customer. We film a bit of that. The boss is showing an apprentice how to do something. We film that too. The team is having smoko and someone tells a joke. We film that.

We're capturing the texture of your workplace. The pace. The standards. The way people talk to each other. The little moments that make this place specifically yours and not someone else's. None of it is staged.

The candidates who later watch the edit will pick up on that authenticity instantly. They can tell when a workplace is being itself versus when it's putting on a performance. The unguarded moments are what make them trust the place.

The interviews: where the gold comes from

Mid-morning or after lunch, we sit down with two or three of your team for short interviews. Usually 10 to 15 minutes each. Nothing scripted.

We ask open questions. "What's it like here?" "Why'd you pick this place?" "What's the hardest day look like?" "Would you recommend it to a mate?" That kind of thing.

Most people are nervous for about 30 seconds. They sit forward, try to give the answer they think we want, look at the camera. Then they realise we're just having a conversation. They relax. They forget the camera's there. That's when you get the gold.

The best lines almost always come in the second half of an interview. After someone's stopped trying to sound impressive and started just talking. Those moments, where they say something real and specific, are what make the final cut land.

We usually walk away with one or two genuinely powerful lines per team member. Those are the moments that anchor the whole campaign.

What we capture beyond people

While the interviews are happening, we're also picking up everything else.

B-roll of the workplace. Clean, organised shots of the bays, the office, the tools, the team in motion. Detail shots that show the standard.

Role visuals. Specific footage of the actual work being done. The kind of thing a candidate watches and thinks "yep, I can picture myself doing that."

Environment shots. Wide shots of the property. Aerials if there's something worth showing. The whole context of where this work happens.

Moments. Smoko, lunch, end-of-day debriefs, the little human bits that make the workplace feel like a place, not just a job.

We're usually wrapped by mid-afternoon. Most shoot days finish around 3pm or 4pm with everyone heading off.

What we walk away with

From one good shoot day, here's what comes out the other side.

A main culture video. Usually 60 to 90 seconds. The hero piece. Shows the workplace, the team, what's special about it. The kind of thing that goes on your careers page and your homepage.

Four to six short ad-ready clips. Each one 15 to 30 seconds, optimised for Facebook and Instagram ads. Different angles. Different hooks. Built so we can test which one performs best and double down on the winner.

Team interview clips. Two or three short testimonials, 20 to 40 seconds each. These get reused across the careers page, social media, and ads.

Still images. Photo content for your socials, your website, your team page, your LinkedIn.

Enough content to run a three-month campaign without filming again.

Why one day works

Most people imagine you'd need multiple shoot days or weeks of production to get this volume of content. You don't.

The reason one day works is that we're not asking your team to perform anything new. We're capturing what's already happening. Your team would be there working anyway. We're just filming it.

And because the content is real, it doesn't go stale. A 30-second clip of your workshop on a normal Tuesday is still going to be useful six months later. You're not building seasonal content. You're building a recruitment asset library.

Many owners use the assets for years, not months. Every time they need to hire, they turn the campaign back on. Every time they update their socials or website, they've got fresh content to use. Once it's done, it's done.

What it asks of you and your team

The day is far less disruptive than most owners fear. Here's the honest picture.

For you, the owner, maybe 30 minutes total. A quick chat at the start, a 10-minute interview yourself if you want to be on camera, and a quick wrap at the end. The rest of the day, you go back to running your business.

For your team, maybe 15 to 20 minutes each for the interviews. Otherwise, they just keep doing their jobs while we film around them. The work happens. The customers get served. The day runs normally.

The biggest thing we ask is that you don't try to clean up too much beforehand. The real version of your workplace is what we want. If you've got an organised shop, we'll see that. If you've got chaos, we'll work around it. But don't spend a week making things look fake.

What this isn't

It's not a corporate brand film. It's not a polished, scripted, ad-agency production. It's not glossy.

It's not a green screen affair. We don't import your team into fake environments. We use the real one.

It's not us telling your team what to say. The whole value comes from authenticity. The moment we start scripting, we lose that.

It's not all day every day for weeks. One focused day, done well, beats a month of half-engaged filming.

The takeaway

A recruitment video shoot day is a relaxed, low-stakes capture of what your workplace already is. Not a performance. Not a production. Just a record of the real thing.

One day gets you the assets to run a three-month campaign, refresh your careers page, populate your socials, and build trust with candidates for years to come.

The hardest part is usually getting started. Once you've done one, it stops feeling like a project and starts feeling like the asset it actually is.
