Your best recruitment tool isn't SEEK. It's not Indeed. It's not even a flash careers page. It's already on your payroll.

It's your team.

When someone is weighing up a new job, they don't trust the ad. They don't trust the website. They trust the people. And nobody can speak for your business like the people who already work there.

Why employee voices are so powerful

Good candidates have been burned before. They've taken jobs at businesses that sounded great in the ad and turned out to be nothing like the promise. They've worked for bosses who said the right things in the interview and turned into a different person on Monday.

So they've stopped trusting words from employers. Every business claims great culture, supportive team, and opportunities to grow. None of those phrases mean anything anymore because every business has used them.

What does still cut through? Real people. Real employees. Talking about what it's actually like to work somewhere.

When a team member jumps on camera for 30 seconds and says "yeah, I actually like it here, here's why," that does more than any job description you'll ever write. It's not polished. It's not scripted. That's the whole point.

What candidates are actually screening for

When a passive candidate watches an employee testimonial, they're not just listening to the words. They're reading everything around the words.

Does this person look like they're being forced to say nice things? Or do they seem genuinely comfortable? Does the language match how a real person would talk? Or does it sound like someone gave them a script? Are they specific about what they like? Or are they reciting generic corporate phrases?

The best testimonials win on all three counts. They're relaxed, in the person's own words, and specific to your business. The candidate watches and thinks "that could be me in a few months."

What makes an employee testimonial work

There's a craft to this. Done well, it's gold. Done badly, it actually hurts your hiring because it looks fake.

Keep it short. 30 to 60 seconds is the sweet spot. Beyond that, attention drops off and the testimonial starts to feel like an ad.

Don't script it. Give the person a few open questions and let them answer in their own words. "Why'd you choose to work here?" "What's the vibe like?" "Would you recommend it to a mate?" The unscripted answers are always better.

Film in their actual workspace. A team member talking on the workshop floor, in front of their machine, in the kitchen they actually cook in, that's where the credibility lives. Filming them in a meeting room with a brand backdrop kills the realness.

Let personality through. If they swear a little, let it stay. If they laugh, leave it in. The personality is what makes it feel real.

Ask for specifics, not generalities. "What's the best part of working here?" is fine, but "What's something most people wouldn't know about this job?" gets a better answer.

The questions that produce the best content

If you want to film employee content tomorrow, here are five questions that consistently produce usable answers.

Why did you choose this place over somewhere else? Surfaces the differentiator without you having to dictate it.

What's something you didn't expect when you started? Gets honest detail about culture and pace.

What's the hardest day look like, and how does the team handle it? Lets candidates see the workplace's character under pressure, which is what they're actually screening for.

Who's someone here you'd recommend grabbing a beer with? Brings out personalities and gives candidates a sense of the people they'd be working with.

If a mate asked you whether they should apply, what would you tell them? A perfect closer. The answer doubles as your most authentic recruitment pitch.

Five questions. Three to five minutes of footage per person. That's enough to cut at least one strong 30-second testimonial.

Why this matters more in a tight market

With unemployment around 4.1% nationally and 3.2% on the Sunshine Coast, the best people aren't browsing job ads. They're employed. They're getting on with it. The only way to pull them out of their current job is to convince them somewhere else is genuinely better.

A job ad can't do that. A website can't do that. Even a careers page on your site only gets you partway. The thing that consistently moves passive candidates is hearing from people who already made the move and are happy they did.

It's social proof. Same psychology that drives every other purchase decision. The candidates are buying a new job, and they want to hear from existing customers (your employees) before they decide.

The byproduct: better customer trust too

Here's a bonus most owners don't think about. The same testimonials that help you hire also help you sell.

A customer scrolling Facebook sees a video of your team talking about why they love working there. They think "that looks like a well-run shop, I'd trust them with my work." One piece of content does double duty.

You're not just building hiring assets. You're building marketing assets that work harder than anything else on your social media. The brand benefit alone usually pays for the shoot.

What to do this week

Grab your phone. Find one team member who's been there a while and seems to genuinely like it. Ask them the five questions above on the workshop floor or in their work area. Film with the phone in landscape, mic clipped or held close. Don't overthink it.

Edit it into a 30 to 60 second clip. Post it on your socials with a simple caption like "Meet one of the team" or "Why she chose this shop." Watch the engagement.

Then do it again next month with someone different.

Within six months, you've built a library of authentic testimonials that quietly recruits for you in the background. The next time you have a role open, you've already done the trust work.

The takeaway

Your best recruiters are already on your payroll. They cost nothing extra. They speak with more credibility than you ever can. And the candidates trust them in a way they'll never trust the business.

Get your team in front of a camera. Ask them why they stay. Let them speak.

The answers are always better than anything you'd put in a job ad.
